Productivity has become an evergreen topic in our fast-paced daily lives. We often leave work feeling drained yet unproductive, largely because we are constantly bombarded by distractions:
- Work emails
- Constant phone calls
- Random app notifications
- Reflexive phone checking
- Social media (FOMO)
There are countless resources on how to “get things done,” but through trial and error, I’ve found a combination of tools and techniques that consistently work for me:
-
Pomodoro Technique: Instead of a physical timer, I use Horo, a free Mac app that displays a countdown directly in the menu bar. Having the timer visible at a glance helps me stay focused and catch myself if I start to drift. Usually, once the first 25-minute session is complete, I find it easy to restart and dive back in for another round.
-
Daywise: Statistics show that the average person in the US receives over 45 push notifications per day. My morning routine used to be hijacked by a lock screen full of alerts. Switching to “batch notifications” with Daywise has been life-changing. I now receive notifications on a set schedule four times a day (8:30, 12:30, 17:00, and 21:30), which has significantly reduced phone-induced distractions.
-
Up Next: This is another essential Mac menu bar tool. It displays my next calendar event in real-time. Rather than being startled by a 15-minute alert, I always know exactly what’s coming up next without having to open my calendar.
-
Dozer: A cluttered menu bar can itself be a distraction. Dozer allows me to hide most icons, keeping only the essentials like Horo and Up Next visible, allowing for a cleaner and more focused workspace.
